Teacher Pay....Should it be based on performance?
I personally don't think teachers pay should be based on students performance. Students learn at different times and levels. As teachers, it is our job to want to help our students learn and get a solid education. That should be our incentive, not money. When teachers are paid based off student performance, I feel they loose sight of the actual teaching. Many times, they keep the same lesson plan and teaching style. These get old and never actually help the student. Whereas a teacher who tries new things with her students. To me, an effective teacher is one who goes out of her way to help her students. She spends time before and after school to get the lesson plans and make things ready for the students. Also, they are compassionate and supportive to their students. They are there to help them along in their journey.

I completely agree with you that it should be a teachers incentive to help our students and not just make money. It annoys me when I see teachers who don't truly enjoy their job and they are just there for the money.
ReplyDeleteI really liked where you said that teachers are there to help students get a solid education, and that should be incentive enough. You made an excellent point there.

ReplyDeleteA teacher told me just last week, "if I wanted to make money I wouldn't be a teacher." I agree with you that an effective teacher will be the least worried about money and most about helping their students to succeed. Another good point to think about is what about in schools with lots of needs where student achievement is harder earned and some cases are not success stories and not the teachers fault? This sort of thing should not be a wage gauge.

I really like how you said a teacher's incentive isn't money. That is totally true because being able to teach and change a students life is just as rewarding.
ReplyDeleteIf you are looking to be a teacher for the money and incentives you are in the wrong field. Individuals who want to be teachers are choosing this path because they love to work with children and want to do everything in their power to make sure that students are succeeding.
